PITTSBURGH (May 21, 2019) -- Brentwood Borough and Bethel Park school districts won first place at the Allegheny County Junior Envirothon on May 17 in South Park.

Allegheny County Conservation District (ACCD) hosted over 200 elementary and middle school students representing 13 school districts at the second annual Junior Envirothon.

Brentwood Middle School students won the middle school division, and Bethel Park School District students won the elementary division.

Junior Envirothon is a hands-on academic environmental competition for elementary and middle school students that requires months of study and teamwork. Teams test their knowledge on five subject areas: soils/land use, wildlife, aquatic ecology, forestry and an evolving current issue. This year’s current issue was “Agriculture and the Environment: Knowledge and Technology to Feed the World.”

Junior Envirothon was launched in 2018 by Thomas Jefferson High School Gifted Support Teacher Dan Giger to mimic the annual high school Envirothon held this April at Boyce Park.

Envirothon provides exposure to environmental career pathways through partnerships with the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission, Pa. Game Commission, Pa. Department of Environmental Protection and the Allegheny County Parks Department.

“As time in the natural world is increasingly spent in the digital world, Envirothon is more critical than ever in providing opportunities for devoted study of the environment,” said Rebecca Zeyzus, ACCD’s Envirothon Coordinator. “The Allegheny County Envirothon and Junior Envirothon would not be possible without the contributions of our sponsors. Donations powered this memorable experience for over 200 outstanding students.”

This year’s sponsors include ACA Engineering, Alcosan, Allegheny County Airport Authority, Allegheny County Parks Department, The Broujos Family, CEC Inc., Columbia Gas, Commonwealth Press, Eddy Homes Inc., Eisler Landscapes, FMG Inc., Gateway Engineering, Golden Triangle Construction, JASE Construction, Laurel Communities, Western Pa. Mushroom Club, McCandless Township Sanitary Authority, MKB Company, Pittsburgh Patagonia, Pa. Envirothon and WM Miller’s Sons, Inc.
